Birthday bash started out with a bang for some…literally. Gun shots fired outside of the Phillips Arena in pure large party fashion as people continued to pile in and pack the vast arena. Recession? "You’s a lie" because there wasn’t an empty seat in the house. So here goes, Birthday Bash 2009 who was there, the good, the bad and the say what?!!

Who:
Jerimih, Young Dro, Young LA, Shop Boys, Hurricane Chris, Sean Garrett, Plies, Fabulous, Young Jezzy, Mary J Blige, Trey Songz, Gorilla Zoe, Nikki Minaj, Pleasure P, O.J. Da Juice Man (name to doggon long!) Rick Ross, Keri Hilson, Bow Wow, Soulja Boy, Players Circle, Weezy and more.

Good:
Trey Songz, Gorilla Zoe, Plies took over the stage (and I’m not even a fan), Weezy showed, MJB got on stage

Bad:
*O.J. the Juiceman’s set was way too long. I almost thought it was the O.J. show…
*Radio One said no media this year due to “legal reasons” and that only MTV could cover the event and get exclusives. I think I broke that rule just a teeny tiny but much more could have been done with the access I had last year.
*The show didn’t end until half past midnight.

Super Bad (added this because my pain is real):
I lost my new favorite ring. POOOO! :(


Say What a.k.a. Whachu Talking Bout Willis:
*So tell me why did Jeezy bring his surprise guest out, Mary J. Blige who we LOVE but didn’t have her sing a song, or even a hook? Who da who??!!
*Rioters, Picketers were outside the arena marching along not so merily with signs ranging from women’s rights all the way to Iran. Now large crowds are a great way to get attention and this would have been good for the “Rainbow People” (do gooders, Peta types, rioters) if it were any other place but birthday bash. I mean Birthday Bash? Did the Rainbows not do their research to know who would be there? There were more people holding up Plies and Rick Ross promotion signs for the ancy kids attending the concert to much care. There were some worthy causes being stood for in that hot sun so I sure hope the rioters efforts weren’t wasted any more than trying to teach a new born to do Halle Berry…I’m just sayin’…

Final Verdict:
Birthday Bash 2008 was much better. Better performances, better access for media and I miss T.I.

People that know me know that EVEN though i'm a social addict i at times struggle between going to events and being a complete homebody nerd. It's comical really...the battlefield of the mind, the imposing display of the two powers that go on in my brain. Anyway not to bore you with the inner workings of my mental, the moral of the story is that the social addict always over powers the homebody. I guess she is stronger. And that's a GOOD thing.

I'm glad i went to participate in Vibe's VSessions, a concert series featuring several up and coming artists that perform live in front of a sometimes non cooperative audience. It just depends. The popular urban magazine teamed up with Heineken deciding to bring their party to Atlanta's Loft in midtown providing beer for all who were thirsty. Kenny Burns made an impressive host and the fabulous DJ Don Cannon kept everyone on the floor entertained in between sets.

Performing artists to look for: DTP's Rudy Clarence, Julie Dexter, Warner Records’ Teairra Mari, and Grand Hustle’s Yung LA. They all did an impressive job! Rudy and Julie were very soulful, while Yung LA drew the most positive feedback and attention from the crowd. I definitely think he is the break out artist that Grand Hustle NEEDS right now. He's got...IT.

Popular artists like Ludacris, Young Joc, Slim (formerly of 112), and one half of the multi talented duo Rock City came to show support along with label execs and other personalities like, Jason Geter, Chaka Zulu and Jay Carter of Soul Fusion. New artists Mz. Smith and Kalene, teaming up with Diddy & Dawn Richard (formerly of Danity Kane) making the group Dirty Money dropping their 1st album this fall, greeted media and guests in the VIP suite taking pictures and generating the excitement that comes with new talent.

Thank you to 135th Street Agency's Saptosa Foster for the access and of course to Vibe for hosting a great event. I didn't just come to cover the event and take pictures but i had fun. Woohooo!!

Hot 107.9 holds it's annual birthday bash every summer highlighting some of the industry's most celebrated artists and performers at the time. This was my 1st birthday bash and one word to describe the festivities is...CRAZY. There was some good, and some not so good. But the worst part of the night was honestly self inflicted, my feet hurt like bees made a nest in my toes (stupid cute shoes!), and me losing my car for almost 40 minutes once i left the actual show did not help! It was a bit of a media circus at the Phillips Arena (event held) but once i snuck backstage it worked out a little better for me, so i'm not complaining.

Other attendees were:
Kanye West (i hate that his folks pretend he is the second coming of The Christ. He's the BOMB but c'mon people. We all use the restroom the same way.)

Alicia Key's Monday night concert was attended by none other than the most attention getting naturally blond girl of the century, Britney Spears. The pop singer, turned mom and tabloid maven, avoiding paparazzi, arrived with her mom (Lynn), her assistant, and two bodyguards in tow. She missed Ne-Yo's act but was just in time to watch Alicia run the show. She appeared to have fun and looked well, according to People Magazine. I wonder if Alicia knew she was coming through. Probably not. Oh well, just thinking.

Today (right at this time actually) she has a progress review hearing in a Los Angeles family court with her ex leach errh husband, Kevin Federlame...uhmm i mean Federlie...i mean Feder-he crossed the-line...no no no...Federline. Okay...sorry don't know what's wrong with me today.

Kanye West chills in Atlanta over the weekend. Was his ATL concert better than Jay's??

Kanye's highly anticipated "Glow in the Dark" concert tour featuring Pharell, Lupe Fiasco and Rihanna finally hit the A this past weekend. My friend and ace, Shem went and said that the concert was bananas! Even better than Jay's (with Mary J) recent concert that hit our great city and i'm like dayum! Yet not shocked. I know that Kanye has major talent. See Ye is the performer while Jay is the more mature seasoned vet with the better business sense. Once Ye cools down on all of his emotion he may be playing in the same league that Jay does. But Ye's got that talent, that crazy genius way about him that creates insane lyrics, awesome press (even though he is banning the press at this point, i get cuz they DO twist folks words) and a style frenzy (Jay can dress but Kanye dressesssssssssssss). Not that the two rappers can be compared on every level, but if to be compared on an intelligent writing, and stage performance level, I'd choose Ye. Not that Jay can't write (he's hot) or ain't got a great presence. It's just that Ye sounds better on paper intellectually and Jay has been around for so long that he's kinda lazy on stage...and damn he can be. He's older so he aint gotta jump around the way Ye does (plus that aint Jay's style or energy), and will sell tickets without really trying. It's good to be Jay. Jay still beats Ye in the swagga department. That boy is tooooo cool for words. Kanye goes off too much to be cool. He's a hot head. He's real wit it, and honest but he's a hot head. Jay will just ignore you and treat you like you are a peasant. AND get away with it. Dag. Incredible Swagger.

Kanye ripped it. Rihanna sang well (so i heard but am not yet convinced), and Lupe fell (and got right back up...he did a Beyonce) on the stage while doing his thing. It's not funny (stifles giggles...) yall.

Rihanna and Chris Brown supposedly were chillin' all lovey dovey at The Verge Lounge (who knows...) and Kanye skipped his after party at Studio 72 (been and I didn't really dig it like i do the Velvet Room), and went to The Chill Spot at 300 Bowling Alley (had a few lanes reserved. I dig the more intimate party instead of clubbin' it alllllllll night long. Love Kanye.) with Quincy Jones, Chaka (DTP) Polow, and Quincy Jones and then hung with Pharell and Jeezy at the Velvet Room. Kanye always does what he wants to do. But if he didn't...would he even be Kanye anymore??

I have NEVER seen a man own a stage like Bilal Sayeed Oliver. The Philadelphia born soul singer that stole the hearts of music lovers in 2001 with his mellow high low notes continues to bring fans to their feet 6 years later!

I arrived with eyes wide open and feet high stepping to a crowd lined down West Peachtree Street being entertained by the base of a LIVE marching band all in wait of the the $25 concert! If this was the pumped up prelude to the show I wondered with excitement what the actual concert would be like! I then knew I would not leave disappointed. Upon nearing the door I was whisked safely inside to set-up for the evening. Once again the Garner Circle PR team (Nicole and Kevin) did an AMAZING job facilitating the event!

Bilal gets ready for his grand event. He hadn't performed in Atlanta, GA for over 5 years so this was "The Big One". Sol Fusion (they totally rock all of their parties out by bringing funky true music lovers together) run by Kenny Burns and J Carter set up their 5 year anniversary party at Center Stage the eve of Thanksgiving with DJ DNice, (who couldn't make it due to a family emergency), Rockport shoes sponsor (led that evening by Michael Barclay of Alloy Access) giving away 250 pairs of free HOT Rockports (endorsed by celebs like Yung Joc), and beloved musical guru for the evening...Bilal. They couldn't have chosen a better performer for the party/concert!

Bilal took the stage and turned it into his musical playground. With his singing, jumping, banging, and pseudo "love-making", he owned the audience and the night for his 2 hour set. He didn't have his dreads to swing any-longer as he performed but they were not needed for effect. His freshly cut do actually added to his cool skater meets funk meets soul singer appearance. He took control and topped everyone's expectations. The show he gave was worth double PLUS the ticket price. Women wanted to be with him and men had to give him respect and surround the stage. Yes he even had the fellas singing and obeying as if enchanted or led by a cult. If you didn't know Bilal before the night started...You knew him after it was over and knew he wasn't a joke.

Intoxicating music filled the air and the aroma from sheer energy and know how was emptied from his small frame as B belted out songs of old and some of new. His presence was giant for a man little over 5 feet. His eccentric and peculiar electricity intrigued you just enough to want to know more.

Other celeb soul singing divas took turns showing some love and sang a few notes as guests of Bilal for the evening. Music's past: Joi, Algebra and Trina Broussard did music justice that night speaking in song.

So where has he been? Why has B been gone so long if he's so good? I got a chance to get these questions answered in the twilight of that evening. Of course it is common knowledge that the soul prince was putting out a much awaited follow-up album to his 2001 debut "1st Born Second" in 2006 but his songs were leaked on the Internet. The damn Internet is a blessing and a curse for artists these days. The leak of course proved to be fatal for any type of album sales that may have come from his proposed album so the deal was dropped and true fans were left without product of word.

Fast forward one year and Bilal tells me that he hasn't put out another album yet because of "Political and in dusty shi*" but that we could expect an album in 2008! Whew so there's hope!

I've done the best in my words to describe the engrossing musical phenom that took place that evening but seeing is better for believing. I can tell you this last thing: If you don't know Bilal get to know him. His album is due out 2008. If you know Bilal...then you KNOW Bilal and can be assured that this truly talented and passionate man has never left.

Ne-Yo is dropped from the Kells tour!

Is Kelly jelly of Ne-Yo?

Did Ne-Yo's camp really just drop the ball on him signing a contract so he could keep performing with Kells? And if that is the case why not simply get him to sign and fulfill his contractual duties which Ne-Yo would have willing done because he was excited about the tour and expressed confusion to why he got dropped so suddenly!!!

"I don't understand their actions because I was rehearsing, doing media, promoting the tour, and performing, said Ne-Yo. In my opinion, I was doing everything possible to make the tour a success. I love being on stage in front of fans because of the immediate feedback you get. You know right away if they are feeling you; and they were really feeling our show."

And you know what this tour will suffer some in my opinion without Ne-Yo. He's a phenomenal artist!!! I'm so embarrassed of R Kelly cuz he's from my dog on home town...now he's making the Windy City look bad. MAAAAAAAAAN!!!

Anyway to add gasoline to the smoke, in an interview yesterday between Big Tigger and Ne-Yo, the million dollar writer stated that he didn't want any beef with the show Headliner (R Kelly) but showed some obvious annoyance when Ne-Yo told Tigger "...as a person, I might have lost a little respect for him." That "him" is of course the Pied Piper himself...RRRRRRRah Kelly. Mmmm mmm MMMMM!
"We dealt with it for as long as we could," said Ne-Yo, "all the silly stuff - can't nobody be in the hallway when he walk through."

Ne-Yo said Kelly took over every last dressing room (7) on the first stop of the tour which left no dressing rooms for Ne-Yo or his dancers. Ne-Yo also said his HOT reviews may have shook Kells up a bit.

This tour has been surrounded by lots of drama...besides R Kelly acting up we also had Keyshia Cole throwing a damn tantrum. Ne-Yo discussed his confusion at Keyshia Cole's 5,4,3,2,1...MELTDOWN in Columbus, Georgia when she refused to go on before Ne-Yo. He said he would love to talk to Keyshia to see what the issue was.

Hmmm...so it looks like some of this stuff we see, hear and speculate about these SILLY celebrities is TRUE!! They are human just like us but because they have money some of them wanna show they booties and they think it's just fine. Whatever...booooooooo for the celeb snobs out there...boooooooooooooooooo to yous!!!!

Kanye's hanging in there- Paris concert breakdown video

The world knows that my man Kanye is dealing with the recent death of his beloved mother & friend Dr. Donda West. Her funeral is tomorrow.

I wondered why there is so much EXTRA press surrounding Dr.Donda West's death. Many celebs have a mother of close family member that passes away and I don't recall there being this much press for many of them. I came up with some reasons why this tragedy has stuck the heart of entertainment America so forcefully:

1. Kanye is at the current height of his fame and popularity
2. Kanye is controversial, a fashion icon, and publicly known to fully speak his mind or have honest outbursts.
3. Kanye and his mother were publicly VERY close. They were family that worked and traveled together.
4. No death is ever at the right time but Dr.Donda West's death was not foreseen.
5. Reports say the death was caused due to post surgery complications so it was possibly avoidable.

Before the passing of his mother Kanye spoke of being excited to get married to fiance Alexis Phifer, fashion designer. He told an interviewer that he didn't want the wedding to be a spectacle because he had nothing to prove to anyone but he was happy to go and just do it because he's found someone who he really loves and is just as crazy as he is. I'm glad to hear the top selling rapper is so much in love. It is good that he has Alexis by his side in this current crisis.

God is in control of all of this of course. I continue to pray for Kanye, Alexis and the entire West family.
